I'll happily volunteer info, but there's not much good I can say bout it's perf since largest userbase at once has been 5 users.

We run it on a 64-bit x86 vps server with 4g of RAM I get for cheap from Europe. It has an Openfire instance on the same box. Together at idle they use 400M of RAM. Both use MariaDB.

Feel free to ask questions but understand this is a bespoke setup and cannot be relied on for reliable metrics.
Thank you! It doesn't matter if you have 2 users or 2000, just being able to actually get answers from people rather than FAQ pages means a lot to me.

Have you ever had any problems with any parts of Mattermost failing? Any memory leaks or significant CPU spikes? I ran Rocket.Chat for about a year, and I found all three to be a chronic and constant plague.

I understand that Mattermost's free edition used to almost completely lack moderation and user controls. I know that has changed now, but have there ever been any features you've genuinely needed that have been locked behind paid licensing?

How well does the chat handle searching and scrolling through old messages? I have used Zulip in the past, and I noticed sometimes it would become extremely choppy when I did either.

I don't monitor the servers super closely because I have them set up to the point that most the time they just run themselves but there's been no major reboots or load spikes. No memory leaking either, but this is under FreeBSD so there may be differences compared to GNU/Linux.

You need to keep a Town square channel, which is annoying, and there's no easy way to do manual account provisioning which is why I've been researching how to fix that.

There is also no way currently to make a channel read only so I did hack up a plugin to fix that. If you wanna use it, I would be happy to pass it to you but you'll need to know some Go, since I'm not the original author of the plug-in I can't really be responsible for walking you through it. It works on our installation though.

It's not terrible but I do plan to eventually install some kind of search indexing system and somehow integrate that into our matter most/xmpp combo

Biggest issue is matterbridge is a crazy ugly piece of tech.

The Chat Service is going away for the time being -- because Mattermost screwed me out of being able to manually make chat accounts it's not something I wanna bother with right now. So yeah, no more for now.
