O2 Power Up Issues - Power Supply? [FIXED]
Hello,

My O2 has been extremely reliable ever since I got it, until today. I had it unplugged for a few days and went to plug it in and use it for a project today and it won't power on. It does not respond to the power or reset buttons, but occasionally as I've been unplugging and plugging back in the power supply, it would come up briefly (this happens with the force poweron jumper on or off). Sometimes it would only stay on for a few seconds, and sometimes it would get to the point where the LED turns green, but I've never gotten it past this point or even gotten a display (unfortunately I do not have a serial cable handy to test the console).

I've reseated both the memory and the CPU, but that has not changed anything. I suspect the power supply, but I was wondering if you guys had any other ideas. My other thought was maybe the Dallas clock chip was bad, but I'm not sure if that would cause this issue.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks!

Did you remove the PSU/Motherboard while the system was stiill plugged in?

I've never removed the motherboard or power supply while it was plugged in. Since my first post, I have gotten it to give me the boot chime a couple of times by leaving it plugged in for a while, then unplugging and plugging it back in. However, I still have not gotten any display.

Edit: Is there any way to verify that the motherboard is dead?

No; but that's really true of any motherboard. My guess is it's the power supply. First thing to do is get a null modem cable and hook it up to your favorite (other) computer, running a terminal program, and see what comes up.

I just ordered a new serial cable that will get here tomorrow, I will update then. I just did another test and was able to get a display, but it didn't boot up fully until it just shut off.

It made it to PROM, and it got past the "Starting up the system" message and I believe I saw the IRIX version number installed on the hard drive before it shut off. This makes me think now that it's the power supply, which to me is better than a dead motherboard.

EDIT: I ordered a new power supply today (Feb 20), which should get here by the end of the week. Will update this post when it is here.

The problem is fixed!

It was as I expected, the power supply was dead. As soon as I put the new PSU in, the system started right up!

Thanks for the advice vishnu and Raion!
