Another obselete workstation: Mac Pro 2019
Hi SGIer's with an Apple Habit,

as owner of a "classic" Mac Pro (2012), I always liked the back to the future Mac Pro 2019 but could never justify the cost barrier.

Now that this new cheese grater is obselete, I can finally afford to add one to my Macintosh collection.

So here are some obsolete workstations looking for company:

Now in process of adding: Wheels (done), CPU Upgrade (28 Core, done), Graphics Upgrade (W6900X, done), Storage (8TB, done) & RAM.

Total cost: still less than equivalently configured Apple Silicon Mac Pro 2023

Cheers from Oz,

Sick! It's beautiful to look at. You're definitely right that the depreciation has made it insanely affordable now.

I imagine it does all the modern Mac things, like 500 simultaneous browser tabs. Did you have any plans for it? Is it now you main modern desktop?

Funny - I use almost every day a 2009 Mac Pro with a Sonnet 4x nvme card. It boots perfectly well Mojave, Windows 10 and Haiku.
64GB RAM (triple channel), and a Vega 64. I was playing Cyberpunk with 30fps lock at 2560x1600. It never makes me wait for anything, and it does fine 4K video editing without proxies with the correct version of Final Cut Pro.

I find quite insane that a machine that can take 1.5TB of RAM is going to be considered obsolete soon.

I never managed to justify myself changing the machine. There's endless power up there provided by our big fusion reactor in the sky, but materials are finite.

HI ghost180sx & Shiunbird,

so yes my new Mac Pro 2019 is now main "desk botton" ;-) and runs very quiety under desk.

I went for last of Intel boxes as I run lots and lots of VM as part of SW development, so need a lot of grunt, storage and RAM.

I had considered using UTM (basically QEMU) but by all reports running Intel VMs via QEMU emulation on Apple Silicon runs like a dog.

To help pay for the 2019 my much loved 2012 has gone to eBay.

It had been upgraded over the years to dual 3.46, PIxlas power mod with Nvidia Titan X CPU and 10GbE. So I got 12 years use out of it.

I stopped using the 2012 box as desktop some time ago when Apple/Nvidia had falling out and the macOS upgrades stopped, so it got relegated to use as server.

I am hoping that Apple will give a few more release of macOS before dropping Intel support completely, as I use Photoshop a lot and Mac has always been great Photoshop platform.

BTW, ghost did you get your Onyx2 back to Canada from Oz ?

Cheers from Oz,
