Irix installation - Disk partitioning

Irix installation - Disk partitioning
I dug out my Fuel and prepare myself for a fresh installation of irix 6.5.28.
In my documentation folder, I found some install info from Nekochan. See also the pdf files in attachment. (PDF not attachable ????)
The pdf states:
Quote:[re]size the partition and use some higher values for the swap disk. Otherwise you end up
with only 128MB swap size

Some members here have also performed an irix installation. Did they increase the swap size? If so, what's a correct value ?
Has they also done this :
Quote:Adjust disk parameters like CTQ, Write buffering etc. to match your needs

Concerning the attachment, I always get the message :
Quote:Please correct the following errors before continuing:The type of file that you attached is not allowed. Please remove the attachment or choose
a different type.

Kind regards,
Mark

RE: Irix installation - Disk partitioning
Changing the swap partition's size is not strictly necessary, because Irix supports both swap partitions and swap files.
See https://techpubs.jurassic.nl/manuals/065.../ch06.html
for more information on how to add swap files if they become necessary to run your programs. That being said, you can enlarge the swap partition if it seems too small. If there is more space on disk than you are going to need, a swap partition between 1X-2X the size of RAM is a reasonable starting point. You should not make the swap partition smaller than the default (so 128MB under 6.5) as there could be problems.

RE: Irix installation - Disk partitioning
I've done it both ways, assuming that you have an adequate amount of RAM it's not something I worry about much anymore. If you're likely to be using swap frequently there is a case for boosting your swap partition, as then the swap doesn't have to go through the main filesystem - but if you're likely to be using swap frequently there also is a case for getting more RAM or a separate swap drive.

Tweaking disk settings and partitions was much more important in the EFS days. Since 6.2 (and even in most cases 5.3) SGI had things down well enough that if you don't know why you're changing something there will probably not be much of an advantage to you.

RE: Irix installation - Disk partitioning
Thanks for the info.
The max. RAM size for the fuel is 4GB, and the actual RAM size is 2GB. So I think to use a swap part of 4GB.
He is equipped with 2 SCSI disks : 36 G + 18 G.
I have the intention to use the 36 G disk for the OS + 4GB swap.
The 18 G disk shall be for the '/usr' directory.

Is this a good plan ?
