I didn't really pay attention to this machine until recently but it looks like I was wrong to assume that the module was audio only. Infact I have successfully connected it to a VCR and run some testing. Both audio and video work (although I am puzzled by the fact that there is 2 rows of identical looking connectors ) and I am more puzzled by the fact that the video section was blanked out with some tape.

At some point it must have been uneconomical for SGI to run a separate production batch for the Audio-only boards. So to continue to support institutional customers who had already tested & qualified systems with audio-only, SGI took AV1 boards from their stockpile and placed a black sticker over the video ports. There's your system, sir, qualified to your specifications! They could also do this to support parts under warranty and systems under support contracts.
