O2 R5k overclock

O2 R5k overclock
Hey gang,

Yeah, finally I got a "recent" SGI (to accompany my 4D/35) ;-)
To my big disappointment the CPU advertised by the seller (R5200/300) turned out to be a 'boring' R5k/180 - because it's my 1st O2 I don't like to return it for having nothing afterwards -we're still haggling about compensation- I thought about boosting it a bit... well, Nekochan had all the nitty-gritty docs how to set the resistors (R1-R7) but as it's offline for now, does anybody of you nice people have the settings saved/at hand?

Cheers, GeekDot

P.S: Do you know where to find an IRIX 5.3 image which runs on IP12? Those found online are not featuring an 'unix.IP12' and seem to be made for an 5k Indy.

Re: O2 R5k overclock
the small cache size on the 180 would make me think modding it to 200 would still have horrible performance :(

but 20mhz is 20mhz amiright? ^_^

for IRIX 5.3, I have two ISO's - as far as I know they are not the Indy version (I have that one too). I can't peer into the ISO's on my win7 box, but here they are, hope they work for you

Sigh, yeah, that's the point... a drowning O2 owner grabbing for straw. And before I manage to get my desired R5200 or 10k I'll use what I have...

GIJoe, you're a fairy godmother! <3
Having just a quick check, the md5's are different to those "enhanced" images and 'strings' gives lots of IP12, so chances are high this will be it!

Thanks a metric ton, will try ASAP and report back!

your welcome. I would hope the compensation would be around $100, thats around the market value for a 300mhz r5k module, that's if you paid a lot to begin with anyway.

Agreed, they go for between $75-$100. Well, that's about what I paid for mine, can't remember exactly.

Well, it started as a bargain as the seller offered two 02's featuring hinv sceenshots of an 300MHz R5k (i.e. 5200) and an 195MHz R10k for $150 :-o (both cases a bit battered but... hey, 150!)
Because he had more "twin deals" on offer, I made clear that I want those pictured and nothing else.
Then after 2 weeks of waiting I got... two r5k/180s... mehhhhhh. Calling him... "Oh, I didn't ship them personally. My employee seem to have confused the already packed boxes... send them back, I reimburse you".
"Well, Mr. Seller, I bought X you sold me Y and the solution for me shall be, lemmethink, nada except hauling the stuff back to the post office?!"
"Ok, I just got another 'big desktop SGI' in. Don't know the model yet, but it's big...<me imagining all SGI models in one sec> I can send you this for free as compensation. Let's have a call in a week, when I know more."

Soooo, if the 'big desktop' is something adequate I might give in... restoring one of the lame O2s and sell them to get somewhere reasonable with my expenditure.
Fun question: What would you think, which 'big desktop SGI' would compensate a 5200/10k vs. 2 5k/180?
I assume the range would be Indy to Indigo 2, an Octane not being desktop'ish enough in the eyes of an SGI noob - and if it's anything x86 I throw the two O2's right back at him...

Besides this: Does really nobody remember the resistor settings for overclocking the 5k to 200MHz?

I think that O2 machines need at least IRIX 6.3

Well I would say either one - 5200 or 10k - is just another league compared to 180 and its pitiful cache. if big he means Onyx, then def take the Onyx Smile of course Octane/Tezro/Origin350 take.
