Drivers and Mechanic advice exchange
This thread is designed to act as a "sink" of random useful tips for helping out others on the road or working on a vehicle. Here's an example of a driving tip:
ABS increases braking distance if you slam it in most surfaces. ABS really is not designed to make you stop faster but to improve vehicle stability while braking and steering. Therefore when you are forced to stop try to remember not to slam full power on your brakes but to gradually apply from moderate to full pressure until you barely feel the tires squeal, then ease off. No need to pump, but it's a lot safer for you. I've also basically quit driving like a maniac. I give people plenty of room to the point that people on the interstate get annoyed with me, I drive a moderate speed in the middle lane etc. This is partially because my daily is a truck and one with not the best braking power so I am very aware that rolling 20 over the posted in heavy traffic is too risky.
An example of a mechanic tip:
Penetrating oil only goes so far. It may not actually help and can actually hurt in several cases; if you plan to heat up the area with a torch to try to help break the rust it will produce toxic fumes. A fastener is going to break primarily because there's no way for it to move.
Easiest way to help prevent that in my experience is to skip heat, and use a breaker bar to remove a stuck fastener, wiggling it back and forth and constantly reapplying penetrating oil to work it in. Also, impact guns have several settings for this so always start out on the lowest setting in an attempt to break a fastener-free.
