I leave all my shite plugged in.. mind you, my electricity bill is about £180 a month.. some stuff has to stay on 24/7..

I leave my stuff plugged in too. If I plan on doing stuff with my SGI's I leave them up 24/7 too. If I find myself in an SGI lul and not really touching them I turn them off for a few months until I get back to them. I usually just leave my Tezro plugged in because its too much of a pain to get under my desk and unplug it.

We've had this question earlier on Nekochan forum.
You are working with computer equipment that is at least 15 years old. Some stuff is approaching 30 years. As JanJaap mentioned on Nekochan, leaving the stuff running unsupervised (AKA asleep) is a potential fire hazard.
Like JanJaap I have a wife and children sleeping in my house, so everything is shut off when not in use.

PS - My RAM comment was in relation to unplugging the fan of the PSU in an O2 to run it silent, not regarding power consumption. Unplugging a PSU fan from an O2 is bad just plain bad juju and asking for trouble!

sgidepot.co.uk says it is an earlier Lucent PSU at a later revision with improved design. Also there is only one harddisk (fujitsu MAX3073NC) in the octane2. In idle it takes 191 Watts.

so you mean you actually physically unplug it or just power it down and leave it plugged in?

I physically unplug machines which are not in use. I do have an O2 which I use on a daily basis and that stays plugged in and I turn it on and off whenever I need it, except when I am on vacation or too busy to work on it, then I pull the plug. The room which contains the O2 also has a fire alarm.

Actually, you made me realize that I had not considered what could happen when I leave the O2 shut off but connected to the grid. I had problems turning on the O2 when left unconnected so I keep that system plugged in.
I also clean PSU's and refit new fans before using them, but I am dubious if I need to put the O2 on a switchable power block.

I'm sort of recalling a post Ian made about a wireless power switch he used, he had a remote control to power it on and off - I'll might just have to maybe start thinking about that.
