Requesting volhdr (sash and ide) dump from IRIX install on O2
I’m currently restoring a backup of my failing IRIX install onto a new disk in my O2, and I neglected to get a basic install going on the disk first to populate the proper volume headers. Unfortunately, the process is several hours in at this point (its rather slow going over fast ethernet) and I’d rather not undo everything and reinstall - so I did some research and it looks like you can extract the appropriate headers using dvhtool:
Code:
dvhtool -v get sash sash /dev/rdsk/dks0d1vh
dvhtool -v get ide ide /dev/rdsk/dks0d1vh

Obviously, dks0d1vh should be replaced with the appropriate disk corresponding to your install. The commands create files ide and sash which I should then be able to use to restore. So if anybody with an O2 (preferably with an r10k/r12k since that’s what mine uses) could provide the files that would be greatly appreciated. I’m not sure if size matters either, but I’m using a 300gb disk FYI.

Also for anyone wondering why I don’t just use the old disk’s headers, it wouldn’t actually boot and I believe the reason why had to do with sash being corrupted somehow. Meanwhile the rootfs was still completely intact which is why I’m attempting to reuse it.

Thanks!

Turns out that this does work! I ended up having to grab a spare disk, do a completely new install, and then I copied those headers over. It probably wouldn't have made a difference had I instead reinstalled using the same disk and then recopied, but either way I had to do a new IRIX install from scratch and I figured it would be better to not lose what I'd already copied.

This was the very helpful guide I found that showed how to do this. I will probably be using that method in the future when I need to clone or backup disks!
