I've been rather silent on site changes because I've been preoccupied and battling my own personal life etc. 

But MyBB just pulled 1.8.23 for pre-release a few days ago and I'm currently testing it locally. From their forum:

Comment: This release includes added support for hCaptcha, reCAPTCHA v3, APCu, Redis, improvements related to ACP's Thread Prefixes management, UTF-8 search, performance, and updates jQuery to 3.5.1.

What this means for us:

1. APCu and Redis. I'll probably try both, but I like Redis. It's faster and more versatile than memcached or APCu, but I'm open to both. 

2. UTF-8 Searching. As part of general updates, this basically means people using non-Latin chars in their post would find it easier to get going. 

jQuery and stuff is moreorless backend stuff. 

1.8.24 is the next, and supposedly, last release before 1.9, with probably a few maintenance releases between it and 1.9

My goal is once a 1.9 beta is released is to make a test site where me, solidcore, and possibly others will redesign the theme in 1.9. Mobile theme will probably not be ported itself, but the new iteration of the irixnet theme will be moreorless responsive. Once that's done, we'll open the site up to users to better see how they feel about it, solicit feedback etc. 

From there; we will work on the HTML gateway, probably using the MyBB Integrator Class or a similar API. This would be toggle-able for users, as it would be an HTTP-only affair. For now, the fact we don't seen forced SSL/HSTS headers doesn't appear to cause any grief with Chrome or Brave or any other browsers. That means those who don't want to resort to the basic HTML gateway don't have to. 

Plans from there will follow. Ideally, I want to make it easier to roll out changes as needed and make the site that much more "special". If there's any feedback for me, let me know. I try to make this as painless as possible, but I'm the site architect, so it's moreorless my job.

Small update: Forums and index pages now have a link to Silicon Image. I've recently updated Silicon Image with some patches, if there's anyone pending verification or who has any issues pm me or kaigan for access.

Finally MyBB 1.8.23 testing was done and I'm currently (as we speak) wrapping it up!

I did not setup Redis this time, but APCu. APCu is enough of a boost for our size, but I have Redis on the table should we decide to move in that direction.
