I'm not sure if he is very famous out of Brazil, where I was born, so I decided to share.
His life story is somehow a legend. Not sure why he left Europe, but he knocked the door of our largest TV broadcaster a few times before being allowed in and getting a job, and he became who many consider to be the best 3D TV artist in the world.
In the 80s, his work was so brilliant that his intros were many minutes long, and people would tune the shows for the intros ONLY.
I really enjoy his explanation of the thought processes behind his decisions.
Naturally, he used SGIs.

I wonder how long it took to render this one out. It's truly impressive.
