Recently I spoke with someone about esound, the enlightened sound daemon. It was originally a part of Enlightenment and GNOME, though GNOME dropped it some time ago.
It's unmaintained piece of software and trying to use it for our systems is not necessarily the best course of action if you have alternatives. I paid Truhobbyist to port sndio, which is used by moc, and optionally by SDL2 (alongside Dmedia support)
dmedia is not a hard API to wrap your head around either.
