I have an old O2 lying around I'm thinking of resurrecting. I've been doing some product design lately, FEA, CAD, CNC. What software is out there for me? I can use ivview for viewing if I can covert step files. What's out there for FEA on Irix? Was there some kind of nastran variant? Thanks.

John Chawner probably still has an IRIX binary of nastran, just google his name his twitter is the first hit.

Don't know if it will run on an O2 and pretty sure I wouldn't want to try, but Wildfire will do cad, cam, and fea.  WF 2 is 64 bit so probably won't run ? Maybe Pro/E 2001 would be nicest on an O2 ?

Varimetrix is cad and cam, runs on an O2 but I've been looking for years without luck. If you come across a copy, scream and shout please ?

I-DEAS is a maybe on an O2 ... or at least you could run it on an O2000 and view it on an O2, like unixmuseum used to do   In fact, if you can find him, that's your best bet because he did All of the Above on a red O2.

My rant for the evening!!!! Everybody seems to want 3D software for these machines, but virtually nobody around here actually uses these machines for what they were intended for, and that's 3D design!

The Art/CG/Rendering section of this forum should be full of posts from members showing the work they've done. (It can be something as simple as an infinity cube, but at least it's something!)

See this as a friendly challenge!!! (If you don't know how to do something, then learn!)

Raion, I understand your take on these machines, and you've never shown interest in 3D software, as far as I'm aware.

My challenge to "get creative" goes out to those who have!

I am in the same boat. I have a engineering background so the 3D CAD style is more familiar. I feel like maybe it is time I learn Maya to get some more use out of my O2. One thing is for sure there are more resources and other users of Maya vs 3D CAD on IRIX.

Users, perhaps. Resources, not really.  All of the tutorials and other material for I-DEAS, Pro/E, Unigraphics, NX, and other CAD programs are just as applicable to Irix as they are to Windows. My main interest has been Pro/E ; I have directories and directories full of stuff I'll probably never have time to get to. It would take a lifetime to become competent at everything that one program can do. There's plenty of resources.

It's likely that there are more Maya users here than CADCAM users ... but that's going to be true in the general public as well. It's fun to draw monsters and space vehicles, much less so to design a new 1/2" electric hand drill

In my opinion, anything created by people can be viewed as being "ART".

So I'd love to see the work you've done on these machines!

Just remember that the "Art/CG/Rendering" sub-forum isn't there just for people to post pretty pictures, but it's also there to show the work that members are doing on their machines.

This should serve to show members what's possible and inspire them!

Part of the experience of owning one of these machines, should include using them for what they were created for in my opinion!

This being said, maybe the "Art/CG/Rendering" sub-forum should have it's name changed to the "Art/CAD/Rendering" sub-forum, to include those who are more inclined towards the CAD side of things, as CAD is definitely interesting!
