Best usable Flame version for my Octane
Hello,

I'll try (again) to install Flame on my Octane.
But before installing it, I asked myself a question : what is the best version that could run as smooth as possible on my configuration ?

1X400Mhz
2 Go Ram
V8
Irix 6.5.26
1 HDD 36Go for system+softwares
2 internal 73Go HDD for datas

I hesitate between v7.6 (looks to be the best choice), v8.3 or v9.0 (perhaps to powerful to be used on my configuration).

I'm a little bit anxious about installing the Stone and Wire system because I've read some many bad reports about it … But I keep the faith by thinking that everything will work at the first time !

Thanks for your advices.

RE: Best usable Flame version for my Octane
I'm afraid you may struggle on those specs, or at the best be limited to PAL / NTSC.
Presuming you are importing and not worried about capture, you are going to have to work on very small clips at a time.
The V8 will be a problem to start, and I am aware that FLINT works on a lowly o2 but that's pretty terrible to work with.
The main problem you have is the internal drives and playback. It will be awful, even if you limit yourself to 'play back by memory' which will only allow you play play clips that memory can hold.

Installing FLAME will not in any way damage you're system. Each install make certain changes which you can change back via chkconfig and it also won't be too detrimental to other products you wish to use, but remember that there are a fair few services running in the back ground when you install. Installing and trying different versions is also fine, but I recommend deleting the whole /usr/discreet folder to get a clean install.

stone + wire etc will work fine with internal drives (that is to say setting the up with sw_config) but to create effects will take you a long time compositing each frame.

As I am sure you are aware, you need a certain file to enable the licensing of you stone disks. This can be left in place un-install. Also take note that if you move to 2007/2008 you need to jig your licence file if you wish to use sw_config.

All in all, I'd say, give 9 a go first and see if it works, I personally have never installed on anything less that a V12. Let me know if you need any help.

Stone+Wire is fine, what have you heard?

Kind Regards..

@ uunix : Thanks for your precious advices

I've read installation guide of the v7.6 and this version seams to be the first to introduce V12 GPU ; that's why I though my Octane V8 should be OK.

I don't want to "work" with it because learning and understanding Flame is a full job. I just want to "play" by creating small sequence in small resolution (keying, tracking, grading …). I don't hope create 10s 1080p@25 sequence with this workstation.

About S+W, I read some posts about people who met problems with the installation … perhaps a problem with the specifict file (?)

Note : there's no proxy system in flame ?

RE: Best usable Flame version for my Octane
I'm unsure about the v8, maybe it would be fine, I have Smoke/Flame running at 1280x1024 on a 2x600, v12 & again at 1280x1024 on 2x400 EMXi and they run OK and for playing around and learning @ PAL /ntsc they would be fine. So you may as well give it a go.

Problems with S+W generally relate to the nightmare of creating a framestore partition. It can be a fscking nightmare to say the least. Other problems relate to IP changes and the sw_framestore_map not being updated.

By proxy, are you meaning, using a framestore on another machine? Yes this can be done (unsure about earlier versions), I can for example run flame 2008 on another Octane without a framestore and use the framestore on the Tezro (whilst the Tezro is in use) and that works pretty good. You could even use the Framestore from a LINUX system running 2008. You obviously have to be careful of release versions. I have never attempted this on an older version.

OR

By proxy are you talking about frame clips (soft clips @ lower resolution)? In which case yes there is, on all versions I think.

Kind Regards

RE: Best usable Flame version for my Octane
When I got my Octane 2 it had Flame 9.5.14 installed which I believe was the last version before they went to "year" releases. Worked fine.
That was a 2x400 / V12 / DMedia configuration, I later upgraded the CPU to 2x600.

This is exaltly what I have read.
That's why I've clone my system HDD when it was in a clean and stable state to work. If there's a problem a can't solve, I could FX this HDD and retry another install.

Yes, that's what I mean with proxy. I use Shake on my Octane and proxy generated clips are really helpful to compensate the lack of power of my workstation.

The first I've eared about Flame was in 1997 with "Brugge - Cités Antérieures" projected at the Imagina Festival ; I was 21 years old and I stay stuck. It's still a reference for me.

@ jan-jaap : thanks for your feedback.

Uunix and you confirm what I thought : v9 and even v8 should be to heavy for my configutation. I will try to install v7.6 and pray to not fell in the S+W nightmare.

I'll give you a feedback when It will be done.

RE: Best usable Flame version for my Octane
I installed Flame 7 on my octane dual 400mhz with Emxi gfx and could not get flame to run due to framestore unsuccessful setup. I tried disk arrays, sgi drives reformatting, but without a writable framestore/ stone drive, the program would not work. If you didn’t have everything in place, it would force you to shut the application down.

I eventually gave up.

RE: Best usable Flame version for my Octane
I've tried : v7.0, v7.6, v8.x (...) / with and without "patchfile" / with and without DL_license.dat (with my hostid …) / with or without installing S+W …
Every time I run Flame, it starts correctly until it display messages about license : "your version is unlicensed" (patch or nopatch + DL_license of the use version) or "can't find license (or something like that)" (path or nopatch + empty DL_license).
I've got IFFFS_(…).exe but it doesn't seem to work correctly or their something I don't know about it.
I sure I'm not so far to have a workable version but after so many tests I'm quite lost.
