Dear forum readers,
Since I have read this article at theregister.co.uk (
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/05/13/sgi_belluzzo/) I am wondering about this sentence:
"But SGI also told the low end graphics team that NVidia would be paying their salaries while they finished their death march, and afterwards they would be NVidia employees".
I am trying to find an answer for this sentence literally for years.
When searching for pictures from inside the SGI headquarters, I did find this excellent report from an intern from Harvard (see attachment). The attachment allows us to specify the exact date when the high end graphics team was canned (July, 29th 1999). This CNet article (
https://www.cnet.com/news/sgi-cutting-ba...-projects/) describes the events back then. From NVidias SEC filings (
https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/...004592.txt) we know that exactly 17 engineers transferred between July 31st, 1999 and October 31st, 1999. This CNet article (
https://www.cnet.com/news/sgi-cutting-up...anization/) describes the announcements made on August 10th, 1999. There you find this sentence: "In addition, SGI has transferred engineers from "Odyssey", its midrange graphics chip project, to NVidia, Kelly said." But this report from the "Friends of Performer" event from SIGGRAPH held at August 11th, 1999 (
http://sgifiles.irixnet.org/sgi/volumize.../0050.html) says, that a team of engineers "will transfer" to NVidia.
So, does this mean, SGI engineers working on Odyssey were paid by Nvidia while working at the Amphitheatre Technology Campus? How long did NVidia pay their salaries?
The "Friends of Performer" mailing-list posting also provides some interesting details. SGI had a working XServer for the VW320? Was this a port of xsgi? Did SGI port the IID to Linux?
Thank you for your insights,
Markus
