Seeking suggestions for analog modem use and off-band management

RE: Seeking suggestions for analog modem use and off-band management
That's an interesting statement.
The Aero 4000's specifications state that it has a "hardware modem", "offloading processing tasks from the CPU", and they emphasise it quite a bit.

Now the Jornada is dead. When it opens the line, it makes a very loud clicking sound and fails with no dial tone.

FreeBSD has a decent documentation, so I set up getty on the modem COM and immediately I can see that the OS captures the modem and it is ready for calls. With all the VoIP compression that goes on this SPA2102, when I connect at 9600 I get ARQs all the time, it is stupidly slow, and at some point the call drops. I have, in theory, chosen the lossless G.711a (also tried u). I managed to connect at 2400 without error correction, but I am probably configuring /etc/ttys wrong - the characters I type directly come across OK but the login screen from the system comes full of ???????.

There are many options on how to handle the codecs in the SPA2102 so I need to dust-off my old VoIP materials.

I remember a Dell my family got in 2000. It was a XPS T500 and it came with a PCI Winmodem. The thing was awful and never connected at more than 28.800. ONCE I saw it connect at 43Kbps and it was the glory. I also hated it for not having any Linux support at the time and it stopped me from getting rid of Windows for a few years. Even our printer at the time was a Lexmark Winwriter 150c that, well... required Windows and pegged 100% of the CPU when it was printing. =(

I'm not surprised the 720 has a softmodem but I am quite surprised to hear that the Aero has one, after the manufacturer stated otherwise.

Oh, and based on your other post, just to clarify... the Aero 4000 is a Hitachi SH-4 Windows CE device. =)
I got it just to have a sample of the SH-4 CPU at home (and it was new-old-stock).

Aaaah, so interesting, in this case there can be another modem, let me double-check. Sorry for that!
Really, I've never heard of SH-4.

Yeah, those PCI Winmodems are mostly Conexant-based... I tried on Linux, there finally was a driver... in 2023 Smile

I can set up something on my side later - for example, make login available on the modem. I hope it's not too expensive to call abroad just for testing

RE: Seeking suggestions for analog modem use and off-band management
I need to re-enable my analog line. I still have DSL on that wire, but I was not using it so I asked the carrier to cut it. It will probably be some rubbish over SIP and we won't get anything above 9600, but enough for a test I assume.

Back then I had for 6 EUR (on top of my mobile subscription) endless EU calls and 2 hours of calls out of EU, so testing won't be a problem I suppose. I can enable call back on the modem. Will be fun!

Once I have the setup ready, I will ask for the line back.
