Onyx 4 boot resolution?

Onyx 4 boot resolution?
Does anyone know how to set the boot resolution of the Onyx 4? I can't get the textport or splash screen/PROM menus. I can get the ATI card BIOS message at a sensible resolution (looks like 1024x768) on other pipes but nothing other than sync errors on pipe 0's monitor until X starts.

I know the initial output is on the analogue pins of the DVI-I connector, switching only to digital once X is running. I've tried the regular xsetmon and the boot resolution option, as well as setmon -x, but nothing changes it. The monitors I have with VGA max out at 1080P and 60Hz (and a 75Hz monitor at 1280x1024 complains too). I tried an ATEN VGA converter we use with servers at work which should do 1920x1200, and that produces signal errors on any modern monitor connected.

I either wait for the boot to get to the login or use a console over the L2 controller. It's not that the splash screen is awesome, I just want to have the PROM menu.

It doesn't matter if pipe 0 is on a G2 brick connected via XIO, or a G2N brick hooked to the R-brick (which core dumps eventually, but I think it's a bad card, something else to look at).
