Case repair? or replacement?

Case repair? or replacement?
Hi All.

I have a tragic story, long one short, I was given 3 SGI's, all of them were thrown off the freight truck and cases were very badly broken.
One O2 was an old style case and one a new style.
the Octanes flip panel broken too.

Can these cases be replaced?
any recommendations.

Its a shame as the 2 O2's were in factory shape.
Im really saddened by this, I hate to replace the existing cases but the restorer in me feels they have gone too far to repair.

Simon

If they were indeed thrown off the freight truck, then claim against the courier company that shipped them!

Such incompetence should not be tolerated!

Try Ian Mapleson’s “SGI Depot” or Mashek Systems in the US for spares, but these are sadly starting to become rather scarce, due to ongoing incidents like this!

My guess is that the O2 will eventually become the most valuable of the SGI’s, as whenever a good example is shipped, it invariably gets destroyed!

I would say that is a doable repair job. Tape the bits together on the outside, then use a mesh and expoy on the inside where you won't see the repair works. Take your time and check the fitting of pieces before glueing. Don't use super glue / crazy glue as it will leave white marks on your case.

You may be left with some hairline cracks on the outside. Replace the top panel completely, these aren't that difficult to come by. You can also replace the cd drive cover, somebody will have one. I think there is one one on ebay.

Hey thanks guys,
I saw that Mashek has skins for both types, as im in New Zealand (many Kiwi SGI owners here?) the shipping may be rough on the pockets.
Ill email SGI depot but to be honest shipping to NZ via USA or UK is both as bad cost wise.

I will repair for now, but man these are brittle plastics, im glad the 1600 monitor survived, that thing fired up perfectly.

None of them have mice so ill wait around until a SG one appears cheap enough.

On a sidebar, does anyone know if one can fine compression covers? both Mashek and SGI Depot didnt seem to list them.

Drop Ian (SGIDepot) or Mashek an e-mail. They do sometimes have bits that aren't listed on the site.

Irinkus: Fully agree. My one O2 is in good condition - with the exception that the clips for the top lid are broken (I broke them the last time I took it apart, pushed them into take the lid off and they just fell apart). However, you can't tell unless you tip it upside-down. In this current world, I'd never use a firm to ship it anywhere. Every time it has been moved it has been in the back of my car with cushions all around it. Just too fragile otherwise.

I'd love if someone could perfect a way of 3D printing the case for the O2. We might get there eventually as 3D printing continues to improve...

Normal PS2 mice work fine, I'm running a usb MS Intellimouse with a cheap £3 PS/2 to USB converter plug.

Do you mean the Octane compression connectors? Just make your own out of some cardboard, that's what most of us do, I think even Ian ships his cards like that.

Put some pics up after the restoration.

The only other SGI person I know of in NZ was KiwiGeek, not sure if he's active anymore. You can probably get hold of him on his YT channel.

The 1600 is a lovely monitor, especially given it's age. 110 dpi looks good! Mine is starting to exhibit some age related backlight issues, but hey-ho, it's 20 years old! Smile

Do you have the Flat Panel adapter card? They are pretty hard to come by so hold on to it!

Edit - Check out this thread for a similar repair....
