I was able to compile it using MIPSpro now thanks for the hints

 Equally important to me were the glpg examples in the 4Dgifts directory (that I had to ask others for on the forum, I didn't have them).

The 4Dgifts were part of IRIX 4.0.x and included source and binaries for some tutorials and other stuff.  It was a separate, optional package on the installation media.  It created a 4Dgifts user whose home directory contained the various goodies.  Think of it as a predecessor to the demos from the IRIX 6.x era.  There's about 22MB of stuff in it on my Indigo running 4.0.5.

Actually, it looks like they're also in the 5.3 IDO, which Raion has at http://ftp.irixnet.org/sgi-irix/development/irix-5.3/.
