Well, I'm pretty sure you should have a PTR record if you also have an SOA record. Or, can you try to set your hosts resolution order to files first? Here is an old thread on the topic from Joerg:

I added my windows machine and my irix machine to my DNS server, checked the hosts file and the resolver order. This is the result of the dig -x command now.
I can still connect to a remote terminal using SSH but can't get a GUI desktop with XDMCP. Is there a specific command to start a GUI enviroment from a SSH text shell?
