nekoware? (What's good and what's not?)

Awesome! Thanks for posting screenshots of these programs. I have an 8 disc set from Ian that I’m working through at the moment to get loaded on my Onyx2.

Any chance you’ve dabbled with either RSS screensavers or Xscreensavers? I’m trying to get them running but none of the OpenGL ones want to work, which is odd since I installed the dependencies it said I needed. I’m sure I’m missing something otherwise they’d work.

I tried them and also couldn't get them to work, as there are a whole lot of dependencies that aren't satisfied!

If you get anything cool to work, that I haven't shown, please post your findings.

Ahh. The dependencies issue makes sense. I figured there must be something missing for them to not work. That’s good to know at least.

If I get anything else running besides what you posted I’ll add it here.

Thanks much!

The easyiest way to see what's wrong is to "cd" to the nekoware bin directory in the console and execute the programs from there, with a "./" preceding the file you want to execute.

If there are dependencies, they will show up in the console.

That could be considered a packaging bug, then.  It sounds like GraphicsMagick depends on neko_xz (for liblzma.so) but that fact wasn't declared in the tardist (otherwise the installer would have complained when installing GraphicsMagick).

Oh well.  At least you've found the solution and posted it here for future users who run into the same problem.  Thanks for your work documenting these!

RE: nekoware? (What's good and what's not?)
The other day, when I stupidly went ahead and tried to install all of nekoware on my Tezro, I came across a rather nice file manager which works in IRIX, and for the life of me I don't remember it's name. It's name started with a letter towards the end of the alphabet. If anyone knows the name of this program, please let me know, as it was rather cool.

The only problem was that I sat with allot of broken programs, but you're right, it did enable me to uncover allot of good stuff too.

Thanks, I've got it up and running! Smile

I also managed to video the install process to give others some insight as to how you go about doing this.

There was only one dependency, being neko_fox, but I think that neko_XZ is also a prerequisite here, as it was for Image Magick, as neko_xfe did't work when I recently tried it, but it does now after installing neko_XZ.

I can name the guys who would even answer questions on the fingers of one hand - and jpstewart is one of the few, the skilled, the good guys. You're lucky he's here.

Awww, shucks. I'm blushing reading that. And it's not really accurate: I'm a lazy slacker. Answering questions is a lot less work for me than actually compiling stuff myself.

At Nekochan, I know Canavan did a lot of good work on Nekoware. Foetz posted links to pre-compiled stuff (not Nekoware packages), and not just for IRIX. (Not sure if either of those two made it over to these forums.) Jan-Jaap is here, and provided pre-compiled binaries for IRIX 4.x freeware. Also here, dexter1 is doing some great work such as libffi and his on-going dual mips3/mips4 packages that are, in my opinion, what Nekoware should have had from the beginning. And those are just the names I remember of a few of the folks I looked up to at Nekochan.

In other words, there were and are a lot of people doing behind-the-scenes stuff (still here today) who don't get enough credit for their work. Answering questions in the forums may be more noticeable, but it's a lot less work. Trust me, I know!
