The manual states that you need a SUN type 6 keyboard to run the machine, is this the only type of keyboard that will work?

I have never had a problem with other USB keyboards. Typical ones from Dell, HP, etc.. I just tested a few random USB keyboards on my own V880.. no problems typing into the ok prompt.
You just do not get the special keys.. like the STOP key.
