I am afraid I am unable to visualize the arrangement. I am not sure if you have two adapters (one for each device) or just one (shared between devices), or what happens at PROM when you have the keyboard connected :(

For what it is worth, I do not believe there is a specific command to configure the keyboard from within PROM, but I may be mistaken. That also implies the keyboard should be working at that stage so I am not sure what might be left to be configured by then.

I would not recommend plugging and unplugging the connectors with the machine up and running. It may be an unnecessary precaution, but these things are starting to get old and delicate, it may be best not to try ones luck.

If you are uncertain of how to configure the setup then I would advise procuring a simpler PS/2 keyboard and mouse. They can still be procured very cheap and you would have one less layer of difficulty and uncertainty. I for one have had good experiences with SGI granite keyboards (duh!), Cherry PS/2 keyboards and at least one Benq PS/2 keyboard. The last two types you can get for really cheap on eBay or similar places.
