Found Extreme Onyx, trying to get it running again.
Hello everyone,
I'm new here, and new to using silicon graphics hardware, though I've been excited to try for a long time.
By sheer luck and chance I stumbled upon an Onyx system with extreme graphics in the basement of a near by university. I have received permission to restore the machine. It was sitting in a hallway for an undetermined number of years.
After taking a look inside, everything seemed like it was in good condition (no water damage at least, no fishy capacitors). After obtaining power and monitor cables (the dip switch 13W3 to svga) I plugged it in and attempted to start it up. The power supply seems good (110 VAC < 15 Amps). All steps complete successfully except for the Checking Inventory step, where it hangs (for a couple hours, before I decide to switch it off). Processor communication seems to be good (B+++). I suspect that I'm getting this issue because one of the cards isn't seated right (perhaps I reinstalled it poorly after I inspected it). Before I take further actions, Does anyone here have thoughts on what the issue is, or general good practices for getting one of these running. So far to debug it I have removed all 4 hard drives. No change.
Note. I do not have mouse and keyboard peripherals for it yet. I held off on acquiring these (as I understand I need to manufacture an adapter) and hoped that other things would be in good order before making the pcb and components. As it seems like all the processors are good, I will start this process soon. Maybe the checking inventory is getting hung up on a lack of keyboard, which would be the best case scenario, but since the manual I found online doesn't really talk about what to do if it hangs, I am in the dark.
Also, please let me know if I did something stupid so far! I have a background in computer science, but not electrical or computer engineering.
Thank you very much everybody,
