Ok I found my error, I will make my excuse first- I have not done any irix/unix programming in over 30 years- I was doing the gunzip and tar commands correctly but I Was looking for the output in the directory I initiated them from? The output was found in a root directory opt.
Thanks for the help from an old fart who still enjoys this stuff - frustrations and all
