Game streaming comes to my mind here: e.g. Open-Stream claims: "[...] up to 4K resolution at up to 120 frames-per-second streaming". That technology maybe could be interesting for your endeavour, too, though not sure if it could be ported to IRIX and not sure how much processing power is needed on the client side to achieve that.
