GNOME goes sideways with an over the top CoC
Remember the whole Contributor Covenant controversy?

It appears GNOME has cranked that up to 11. Namely they call out "Privileged" people and seek to separate them from others, singling them out:

Quote:The GNOME community prioritizes marginalized people's safety over privileged people's comfort.

I don't like talking about these sorts of things and I'm hoping that this thread doesn't become a shitshow but I think it's becoming a bit insane when "safety" extends to feelings. This is important to talk about.

I'm going to draw a simile to my father's profession: professional chef

They have a saying: "If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen."

Working in the kitchen can be quite stressful, and insults and threats and blows to an ego can happen on a regular basis. I used to be a clerk at my father's restaurant in high school and no joke he grabbed a sous chef by a collar and threatened to "wrap a pan around his head". To drive home a point. This was over 10 years ago

Am I condoning aggressive behavior towards other people? No.

What I am suggesting that if you can't take someone else's opinions, getting your ego bruised, taking a bit of a browbeating, or being challenged on your ego you probably don't belong as a developer. Accepting criticism gracefully is not fun. But if you either don't understand how to navigate that, or bite back in a way that doesn't immediately turn to Godwin's law or something, you don't deserve to be a developer.

I've experienced it myself. I no longer contribute ro the FreeBSD project directly because of this. I declined to help HardenedBSD (Shawn Webb is a great dude, and a talented programmer, but we don't see eye to eye) and have drawn the ire of some developers and users for my opinions.

All of that said, I think that it's important to not let yourself get discouraged because of what others think. It's important to grow a thick skin. And if you can't hold together because someone says something annoying about you or your work, well, find something lower stress. Maybe a librarian or auto mechanic is a smarter career.

For GNOME, I'm personally not a user of them, but I think a boycott should happen. I'm working on some projects, but once I clear those out, I'm gonna start looking into ways to purge GNOME/gtk/freedesktop bullshit from my machines. This is going nuts.

Technical problems should be sent my way.
