New Domain Name, New Era

New Domain Name, New Era
Greetings Everyone,

Raion here.

I have decided to give us a new name. I wanted for years for us to have IRIX.NET, but this is not currently a possibility. Neither irix.net or irix.org will sell the domain to me, and irix.com is owned by a company in India and made it clear in very rude Hindi that they didn't want to sell.

I have come to a compromise - IRIXNET.ORG - this reflects the point of this place to be an organization. It's not as long as irixnetwork/irix-network and it's only a bit longer than irix.cc. I hated people referring to this place as irix.cc for short.

I am bringing new redesign changes, and will be recruiting more staff and promoting some of our current staff to roles in the organization. These will be coming shortly.

RE: New Domain Name, New Era
In my oppinion the old domain name was better as it sY shorter. Will the old domain still be reachable?

It's being redirected. Eventually I'll repurpose it for some things.

Hm, I also preferred irix.cc to this, it was short and snappy... irixnet sounds a bit generic.

This is not going to be reversed because I'm tired of people referencing the place as "irix.cc" and not as IRIX Network, its actual name. You don't call Facebook Facebook.com, ir Gab gab.ai or so-on. I could not get irix.io, irix.com, etc. So this was the best compromise rather than fully spelling it out

People are just gonna call it irixnet.org then. I wouldn't worry about it.

First off, thanks for the e-mail you sent out to everyone last night. It was nice to get a heads-up about the name change. Without it, I might have wondered what was going on.

One minor issue I noticed is that https://forums.irix.cc/ redirects to http://forums.irixnet.org/ (without the "s" in the protocol) as of the time of writing. I suspect that's unintentional. Not that it's a big deal...

I still think calling it IrixCC is much better than "The Irix Network", why should it get such a long name? What's the actual point?

A huge improvement. irixnet or irixnet.org is far better.

Still working out redirects. I want to preserve plain http access so there's not a lot of ways to do that and still get a proper SSL padlock.

And yeah Eudatux I don't like "irix.cc" because it's not the proper name of the site. I have obsessive compulsive disorder, though, so that's why it bothers me. It's not a matter of just letting it go because I literally cannot. I have a compulsion to correct anyone calling it irix.cc.

The .org also emphasizes the nature of the site. Eventual plans are to make this a 501c to allow people to get tax breaks for donations and further legitimize the presence.

SEO is also a lot harder with regional domain names like .cc

But why did you then consider irix.com, irix.net and irix.io? Those also don't bring the "network" aspect in... And people would have called it "irix.com" and also not "irix network"... I don't get it...
