Vishnu, with all due respect, this is a new user who has just started out with his stuff. He bought an octane, and is trying to either reinstall IRIX or get into it by overwriting the passwd in /etc/shadow. He can't just su, single user mode doesn't work unless you have root access already.

He's well and truly stuck unless he manages to boot a miniroot.

Well, I absolutely agree with what you are saying Raion, but the thing about the entire concept is, if you own an SGI, but you don't have access to the root user account, then well, that's just a ridiculous problem.

I just bought the machine and it has a password, I just wanted to see if I could access it before I could get a way to reinstall.

Just trying to figure out what is preventing you from net booting successfully. From the error message it seems like the linux "server" is not expecting requests from your sgi machine.

The gpu trying to crack the password is certainly keeping my office on the toasty side of things, so if you manage to bypass the password it will make my life much more confortable

Like I keep saying, if you can boot to an Irix cd, mount the disk and there's nothing you can't do with it.

I haven't used LOVE, so odds are I'm missing something, but I noticed that your screen shot implied you're trying to load from love.60, which is IRIX 6.0.
I think you want to load from love.657.1 or higher for the octane (love.6530.1 would be optimal, maybe?)

Toward the end of https://contrib.irixnet.org/truhobbyist/..._guide.txt there's a step by step of how to install IRIX 6.5

I sure hope it's an easy fix like that and we can get you netbooting!

I'm not sure what I need to configure on the Linux server I disabled the firewall completelly and I still couldn't connect.

Hey thanks, yeah in the screenshot I was trying that but I tried them all, I think the issue is with something related to the connection, seems like the linux server/bootp is ignoring the connection, on anther guide I read that is related to a netd bug I think but there is not mention on how to solve it.
I have a plan to use a "CDROM" emulator with the ZuluSCSI card, just waiting for a cable so I can connect it.

Is an Octane machine, I do not have a CDROM drive, I will use a ZuluSCSI card to function as an external CDROM, waiting for some parts for that.
