Challenge S. ideas
I have a challenge S arriving soon as the price was too good to pass up - not to mention the skins are in almost new condition. I have been contemplating how to integrate this into my setup. Some ideas I have are:

Use if for backups
File server I.e. store all my inst discs, and applications, documentations etc
Can’t think of anything else...

Ps. I don’t have any experience working on headless terminals, so there will be learning curve.

I like to here some ideas...

A file server would be pretty cool. Would likely make it pretty easy to share things across your different systems.

As a plus you could mirror the FTP and have local access to the files, though I don’t know how useful this would ultimately be.

I too have a Challenge S and I plan on using it as my NIS and NFS server. They also make pretty sweet webservers too, as long as it's behind a good firewall.

Re: Challenge S. ideas
A Challenge S is best used as a dedicated webserver for documentation and a file- and installation server for sgi-specific software. Be sure to get a G130 100mbit Ethernet card since the file serving otherwise will be quite slow.
It is probably one of the lowest Watt-per-system IRIX machine, but it will never beat a dedicated NAS or embedded storage system.

I used mine for a long time as a net-install server for IRIX workstations. At some point my Origin 200 took over.

Install server for sure...and would probably be great for NIS and NFS for the fleet. There's an SGI 10/100 Ethernet card to watch out for besides the Phobos G130. The SGI card is supported by the miniroot by the way - so you can netinstall over 100mbit if you have one in a Challenge S or Indy.

Since you're new to Challenge S, the first Ethernet interface is AUI only, so if you're planning a network install on the Challenge S, make sure you have a transceiver.

I was also thinking of using it for application storage, manuals etc. I also thought of using it as an FTP server. Thanks for all the good ideas.
