Announcing RSE Release 6

https://github.com/sgidevnet/sgug-rse/re...v0.0.6beta

RSE - the RPM Software Environment for IRIX provides a modern GCC toolchain plus a whole bunch of supporting software packages to make IRIX useful today in a modern context.

0.0.6 Beta Release - "Not Just Tools"

Our biggest release so far - and things are starting to be rich enough to include desktop style applications.

This release had 501 commits, with 806 changes to our repository. There are too many changes to list the individual packages here. A quick summary is that the previous release had approx 450 binary RPMs to install. This release brings that number to 823.

Some honourable mentions:

    - A "new" libX11 client library foundation
    - A version of GTK2 that sits on top of the above
    - Rounding out of the base platform tools to include cmake, meson, ninja, glib2, an "official" python2 and python3
    - The "Pidgin" IM tool - along with the purple-discord plugin for it to connect natively from IRIX to discord
    - "Worker" - a GUI based midnight commander style file management application

The full list of packages included in the release build may be found in the sgug-rse repository "releasepackages.lst" file.

With Pidgin and Worker (A DirOpus clone) RSE has evolved to the point where some sophisticated X (gtk2) applications are being built supporting modern protocols and data formats. RSE beta6 today provides an out-of-the-box experience for any IRIX 6.5.xx (.22 or .30) user- with a very simple installation path.

RSE also provides a fully working gcc based tool chain for further development and exploration!

Please consider downloading and trying it out on your SGI.

If your SGI does not yet run 6.5.30 there is a network-based install method called Booterizer available on GH that will do the job for you in about an hour...
https://github.com/unxmaal/booterizer
and once you have 6.5.30 on your SGI grab RSE and enjoy the apps!

Major contributors to rse b6 are:

- Hammy (master of the RPM)
- Unxmaal (silent pidgin whisperer)
- HAL (abstracting hardware always)
- mach_kernel (automating the builds and commits monolithically)

RE: Announcing RSE Release 6
If you want to share releases and offer a support and feedback thread I can give you guys a separate subforum of development/porting. I just want to ensure that if I do you'll make regular releases and announcement information and it doesn't end up an abandoned forum full of tumbleweeds.

That would be useful. If you go ahead and set it up we will watch it.

I moved it into here because we already have Nekoware threads here in a subforum. The distinction is minimal but I wanted to keep them grouped together.

RE: Announcing RSE Release 6
For the record if it's really that important to you I don't mind, I just thought that it made better sense since you are mostly doing announcements for it to be in the software category.
