FUEL : Looking for advice. - DavisX - 02-10-2019

Ciao!
After a long time in power off mode, I've decided to wake up my Fuel.
The good thing is working well, giving in the last week an upgrade. A sound upgrade. Is not the best solution but the sound blaster is good enough.
A good stuff, but I have to fix a couple of things, anyway understand.
First one : the RTC. Is dead. Not surprised after 5 years in my garage. I guess I need to get a new 1742W-120+. Is that correct?
Second one : A strange sound comes from the machine. I really dunno what is that, apparently comes from HD. The fans are ok.
While looking for information I found this video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jD2ugHENDIs. Exactly the same sound at min 1:22, 1:23 as if it were a cry. Makes my crazy.

Thanks in advance for any recommendation.

Hi.

For your RTC: Better try and replace the yellow snaphat battery first. If that doesnt work try to find a dallas chip. Hint: It will be super hard and/or expensive.

The sound of the disc seems to be bearing damage which is common on old scsi discs. Try to find a new replacement. Or you could buy my aztec monster II and put in a SSD Smile

I've had my Fuel for over ten years and it's always made that noise. No problem at all, still working without issues.

And yes, I had to replace the yellow battery some years ago. I bought via eBay to a chinese seller.

Thank you guys!
Is the yellow battery, let me say, standard? Or is required a specific model.
Just found on ebay a couple of options from China for less than 5 euro

It's this one: https://nl.farnell.com/stmicroelectronics/m4t28-br12sh1/ic-timekeeper-snaphat-12-5pf/dp/1467820
Sometimes it's bigger capacity brother (M4T32-BR12SH1) is more easily available.

Farnell is Newark in the US I believe, there's also RS electronics, Mouser, Digikey ...

With China parts there's always the risk you get something that's been on a shelf for a decade, and shipping will take 3 weeks.

Amazon has the battery.

Just bought on Amazon.
Thanks a lot guys! Really appreciated

Anyway, just a consideration. While I'm moving on management as job I'm still a "nerd" guy. Containers, Kubernetes, AWS, Golang..but...how is beautiful Irix! And in general hands on hardware and OS.
Long time no hands on...and I found (again) an active community!
I haven't time to dedicate on all single machine that I got in years but I'm just seeing my O2/R12000 with a fixed red led since 10 years and now I need to maintain the promise to recover it Smile

Hi,

is the Fuel repaired again?
I've had exacly the same issue over a year ago - sadly my Fuel died.
It wasn't powering on due to some lost data regarding license, which was kept in the old Dallas RTC.
While I was able to connect to the Level1 controller (the RS232 conector on the mainboard), I bought a replacement batt on ebay.
However on assembling I might have borked the complete thing, I've no exact recollection of the situation anymore - but I think I was not careful enough.

That strange sound is normal for some SCSI HDD's, I believe most common among Fujitsu drives.
Replacing with other brand/model, perhaps a modern 15k rpm one (not for the speed, since fuel only does U160, but for the "modern-ness" of the hdd design) should help.
