Out of curiosity, is dvd playback possible on an O2? If it is, what are the minimum specs required?

My O2 + reads data DVDs but I have not tested with a DVD video.

My Toshiba can read non-commercial video DVDs, but I've not found a way to playback the files yet.
There is a dvd decrypt library in nekochan, I've not tried it yet.

Try with mplayer from nekoware, maybe it might work

DVD playback on the O2 is not really an option, it just doesn't have enough CPU power, and the best program to use is Mplayer 1.1.1, and it doesn't really work well on the o2 due to the O2's openGL version 1.1. I believe Vpro was openGL version 1.2 and that's what the software was written for.
It's been a few years since I played with Mplayer 1.1.1 - I'll play with it again on my o2 and report back, but I do recall there being some deal ending problems

I can confirm this. My O2 (R10k/250, 1GB of RAM) is too slow (I tried to use the mplayer few years ago).

Just fired up Mplayer on my O2, and a non-commercial DVD plays OK but only if I run the -nosound options. Otherwise it's a slideshow...
Don't have a DVD drive enclosure for my Octane so can't test it, but I suspect it should do playback OK...

If memory serves, the integer performance of MIPS is fairly similar to Intel's x86 CPUs of the time (floating point obviously being an entirely different story). For those, I seem to recall that a PII 450 was required for smooth playback of DVDs. I certainly remember my old P233 struggling badly to play DVDs in realtime, I actually had a dedicated DVD decoder card for it back in the day.
Hence if this is true, a 400MHz MIPS CPU *may* just about work, but you might need a 500MHz or faster CPU for it.
