Help with Serial connection - vladio - 01-29-2019

Bummer about Nekochan! I haven't turned on the old SGI's in years, powered up the Octane and tried to visit the site and nada. What a wealth of info that was.

I've tried to fire up the Onyx2 over the last couple years and it won't boot. I get the blue screen and it sits there, the graphics module never boots. It's been years since I adopted the Onyx2 from a Nekochan member that was trying to find it a home. It worked, no problems, but I had a hard time finding time to play with it so it's been sitting. I've run into this boot problem before and worked the issue out using the console on my Octane but, for the life of me, I don't remember what I did to get the two to talk. I still have the serial cable connected between the Onyx and the Octane but can't remember the syntax to start the communication. If I remember... it was "cu" something. Can anyone help me out with this? I was a graphics guy, did modeling and animation, but, unfortunately, we worked on PC's in the early 90's so my experience with IRIX is slim.

Any help is appreciated!

cu -s 9600 -e -o -d /dev/ttyS0 (or whatever the device name of your serial port is) ought to work (-s for speed, -e and -o to set no parity, -d for the device).

Oh hey Vladio!

That was my Onyx2! I have an Origin 2000 rack now (luckily not looking for a new home)

Yeah Nekochan is gone. Hope you and your family are well and welcome to the new site!

Hey brother! How did the move go? The old girl's still in good hands! I've been procrastinating getting it back up and running... Onyx are temperamental!! I changed some of my network setting among my other machines and now the boot hangs. I ran into this right after I got it from you and set it up, I just don't remember some of this stuff but it's starting to come back.

Is this the new SGI/Irix place to be? Nekochan was just such a great tool, at least for me, I was pretty sad to see it was gone. Is Vishnu on this forum?

Good hearing from you man!

Thank you, my friend! I remember your picture, what was your username on Nekochan? If I remember correctly you're in the U.K. and had kids?

As far as I'm aware I'm the only game in town. Some people have, through the grapevine, wanted to start up their own form because they aren't satisfied with some of my rules, development and organization. The thing I've always told people is that competition is good. But it's really difficult to get a consensus unless you have a centralized, charismatic person in charge. I wouldn't call myself super charismatic but I am honest upstanding and overall friendly, and I seem to be the only person who has the skills necessary to handle a website of this scale.

We got hit pretty hard during the vice motherboard article drop with over 2500 hits a day. Normal hosting would have keeled over at half that but my years of working as a sysadmin have paid off and I don't have a problem managing stuff as a result. There are times I've been in over my head and I have had abortive ideas but ultimately my place as the rock of the community isn't going to change anytime soon.

I'm on here using the Onyx! Got it back up and running... looks like it was booting to the System Maintenance Menu and waiting for the "Start System". This never happened, it's always booted up to the desktop without me having to make that menu selection.

My room was 50*F when I turned it on, 30 minutes later it was 70. lol. The world most powerful space heater! 6000 Watts of 240V.
