Octane backplane ?battery? -
callahan - 12-31-2018
I'm in the process of refurbing my Octane's fans (the 92mm sounds like a very angry cat during startup) so I pulled the
backplane frontplane to R&R the 60mm xbow fan too. (sidenote: happy to do a writeup of these fans for the wiki once complete).
On the back of the backplane (i.e. the side that faces into the computer) I noticed an item that looks like a small battery just above the "System ID" label. Photos of the mystery component are in the
linked imgur album. I did check for voltage across the two sides and got a solid zero.
Any idea what this is?
Ninja edit -- And apparently it's called the frontplane, not the backplane.

It's a number-in-a-can module, not a battery. It provide sysid info to License Manager amoung other things.

Figured it was something like thus given the system ID silkscreen nearby. Thanks!

Writeup for silencing the fans (and Octane)

That post is fantastic. I was thinking it would be nice to document original item numbers (the panaflo fans are still available).
My plan is to put a Noctua redux 120mm in the top bay (mostly complete). I also trimmed the front panel slightly differently to keep more of the xbow (and power lugs) protected while keeping full access to the 60x60x10 fan. I'm also swapping that out, but with a nearly direct replacement.
We'll see how it all goes when put back together.

I thought of doing the same with the drivebay fan, but didn't want to cut my one and only plastic fan shroud.
Keep an eye on your fan static pressures, it's not all about cfm in the Octane.
