When you say it does not let you onto users screen, what exactly does happen?

If it blanks your screen, it could be a screen resolution issue, else, if it just hangs there displaying some network information, it could be a network issue.

[Edit] Ah, sorry I didn't see the link to the screen shot.

Bad address might indicate a memory issue, did anything in the case get nudged or was it strictly a software update?

I did an update of IRIX 6.2 to 6.5.5

wait wat? I wasn't aware you could do that...

I think your best bet would be to do a fresh install of 6.5.5 on a fresh disk

when I bought the SGI Indigo2 on eBay, the owner told me to update it, and I'm not an IRIX expert, I do not know what is right or wrong, I do not know if the modern hard drives are compatible with my SGI, as I said I am not an expert new on the whole subject of SGI and IRIX

At this stage the safest way to proceed (if there is nothing worth preserving on that disk) is to attempt a fresh IRIX 6.5 install as advised above. A procedure to upgrade from 6.2 to 6.5.x seems to exist but it is probably not for the faint of heart. See, for instance, an extract from the CD booklets:

Quote:For example, by following the instructions in the IRIX 6.5 Installation Instructions CD booklet, you can upgrade directly from IRIX 6.2 to 6.5.21.

http://csweb.cs.wfu.edu/~torgerse/Kokua/Irix_6.5.21_doc_cd/WhatsNew/install/checklist_reorg.html

The success of this procedure, I would imagine, would depend on following it to the letter, as well as on the applications which were previously installed, libraries, etc. I think it is going to be quite complicated to reverse the existing process and clear whatever error might be present.

If you have a good set of IRIX 6.5 CDs then I would definitely start from scratch, the following procedure as well as the information contained in the installation booklets can help.

You may wish to remove and set the existing disk aside for further examination in case there could be something worth preserving there, as it can always be mounted as a secondary disk once you have a working disk with a fresh IRIX copy. You can order a new SCSI drive with 80 pins (SCA type) or use an older SCSI drive with 50 pins using an 80/50 pin adapter. My Indigo2 came with two old disks fitted with 80/50 adapters, not sure whether that would be standard or just an oddity.

I would say that's standard at this point in time.  I posted here https://forums.irix.cc/thread-485-post-3746.html#pid3746 the type of SCSI disk and adapter I use in my Indigo2.

But I would def agree - put the current drive to the side and try to do a fresh install on a new disk.
