Questions about Net-Install with DINA - colin_419 - 12-30-2024
Hi everyone!
I have an SGI Indy that I'd like to perform a net-install on and upgrade to 6.5.2. I've gone ahead and already got DINA running on my local network.
I have two main questions here:
1) I have extracted the IRIX 6.5.2 image files (disks 1 and 2 that I obtained) and have their contents, but I do not know if I should place all of the contents directly into DINA's /irix/6.5/<disk_number> directory. Essentially, I just don't know what DINA is expecting me to do as far as unpacking these files into their respective locations.
2) I know I need sashARCS but I can't find any sashARCS file within any of the disc images that I unpacked. Does anyone know if this came with DINA, or if I have to locate this some other way?
Thanks for the help, I'd really like to get this Indy back to life with a fresh install of 6.5.x. Currently I'm running 5.2 on the original drive, but I don't want to risk running it any more. Your input is much appreciated.

DINA is no longer recommended for this. I can instead recommend the LOVE project. We can of course troubleshoot that situation but there is no reason to upgrade to 6.5.2; you want .22:

If you need more specific help setting up love feel free to post in here. It's really nice and a little bit more intuitive for people who are new to this.

I was using 6.5.22 to be more specific, but I did go ahead and grab the img files you linked to. It looks like nginx cant find the guide for love_guide.txt, not sure if the file is missing or if NGINX is goofing up on a cfg, but I figured to let you know!

Hey Raion, just wanted to say thanks, I have love working and cold installed IRIX 6.2 over the network. My Indy is just performing ELF Requickstarting now after the install. This is too awesome!

I'm grateful you were here to help! So the installation went great, and I do have IRIX 6.2 on the system now, but with no desktop environment. There is no /usr/bin/X11 folder, so perhaps my installation only included the core operating system. Any chance you know if I can install the desktop environment after installing the operating system? I'm still excited that this worked, but I'd love to get a desktop going.

For miniroot I used the XFS filesystem and 4096 block size. I was seeing somewhere that not having enough disk space may cause the desktop to not be installed. Also just a fair warning, this is a 300GB HP HDD that was brand new. I used the latest version of FX to format the drive. I just ran df and only have one file system, /dev/root with 585,663,256 blocks. I think I messed something up with setting up my drive (eek). I do have some tips from another member about formatting a larger hard drive. He warned that you'll end up with a very small partition if you don't follow these instructions.

I'm pretty positive what I did wrong. Embarrassingly I only installed overlay 1 of 3, and forgot to install the base applications of 6.5. I'll be trying to install a different version though as my Indy only has 64MB of memory. From what I've read, 6.5.22 is not going to be very useable with just 64MB of memory.
