best freeware and nekoware? -
echo - 10-29-2024
has anyone made a list of which are essential or good to have?
the wiki at preterhuman has a list of what i assume is all of it, and sometimes descriptions.
but it's a mystery as to which are any good and most of the nekoware has no description at all, just a filename.
if such a list doesn't exist it would be great if you guys can give your opinions,
say what the app does and why its good or better/worse than another one.
or if you think one is useless, say that too.
i'm mainly interested in programming and 3d modelling/animation stuff. so what is useful to me maybe useless crap to you.
but we can probably find a consensus of what is good and bad for a certain type of user.
and of course, what apps are general purpose and useful to everyone, and what is bloat and useful to nobody.

all good...

thanks vishnu you're the best!
i just got my sgi so i don't know anything about what are the good apps to use.
(I'm still setting up actually, I don't have a working system yet, but soon)
i will use maya & photoshop mostly, and shake, or things like that.
but i think the nekoware has things like vim in it, which are also good.
only have 18gb hdd right now. how big is it if i install all the software ever made for sgi?
if you say to install everything... how big is it?

I have started making a list of programming related software here:

Using an LLM to compile a list is not the best option. They absolutely do get false positives and all they're doing is is reading forum posts and other content that may be incorrect.
I'm not judging your intentions though, I'm just criticizing your methods.
Someone wanted to get Tendra on IRIX and I did at one point have a partially working PCC tool chain.

You told me above "It's a large ask" and nobody else wanted to give opinions either. So if nobody wants to talk I have to do what I can.
I asked the AI's for their confidence score to filter/reduce false statements. its not a perfect list but its better than nothing.
To help me out, mention a software name, where it comes from & what it does, and URLs if available.
"Portable C Compiler" & TenDRA Compiler? google search did not find anything about these on irix.

I had a pcc-irix repo unfortunately it was lost in backups but I can describe what we did to get it working again if someone decides to pick it up. Might wanna ask user aurxenon if he has the repo backed up.
TenDRA on IRIX was discussed on mailing lists about a decade ago.
Besides that, I know lcc had a port of it.
