New Teal Indigo2 / Galileo & Cosmo Question - legodude - 09-23-2024

My SGI adventures recently have consisted of playing with my Octanes and feeling sad that my purple Indigo 2 power supply is dead, with a sprinkle of living vicariously through Ebay. A teal Indigo2 came up and looked reasonably loaded, but "untested" so I submitted an offer and a few days later the following machine showed up:

200mhz R4400
128mb -> 256mb
2gb disk
Tape drive
CDROM
XL graphics
Galileo Video
Cosmo
Fore EISA ATM

The system is in great condition and is ex-Purdue. From what I can tell, it was decommissioned and stuck in a closet. The plastic is a bit yellow, but otherwise intact. After some adventures with re-seating cards and deoxit, as well as a battle with my KVM, it fires up reliably. I had 4x32mb sitting around from a poorly described Ebay listing, so it now has 256mb.

My main question concerns the interplay between the Galileo and Cosmo boards. From my reading, it seems that there should be an external cable to jumper between the Galileo and Cosmo boards, is that correct? Does anyone have a picture of this cable?

I have an IndyCam coming which it seems I can plug directly into the Galileo or Cosmo (if properly set up). I know that other breakout boxes/cables exist, but are getting incredibly rare.

Presumably you have seen The Lurker's Guide which details these points.
I don't recall ever seeing that cable, but I have not seen a Cosmo, either. A custom cable can be made by various online stores if you give them information.

Yeah, I found that guide early in my research and the following is the best description of the cable:

Code:
Cosmo Compress for Indigo2

board has one "indycam connector" on it to connect it to ev1
board has a second "indycam connector"
can plug in a DBOB if ev1 supports it
can plug in an IndyCam if ev1 supports it

I have the pinouts for the connectors* and could whip up an analog cable, but doing 60pins x2 for digital does not look like fun. I've seen plenty of breakout boxes and other cables, but I can't remember ever seeing this digital cable either. It looks like a nice Galileo box just went on Ebay for $80... sigh.

The cable will be 30 twisted pairs, plus or minus. There are two ways of terminating such connectors, either by soldering every pin manually, which is time consuming, painstaking, but requires no special tooling; or by using a crimp tool in an arbor with expensive "mass termination" jigs.

Edit: not sure if this is of any use, but might be worth checking out: LFH-60 male to male cable

Thanks for the lead on the cable, looking up the proper name of the cable was on my todo list. That title is promising, but then the picture and description are of DB37 to V.35.. I did find some premade LFH60 M-M cables, but with a Cisco pinout*. It would probably be easier to snip and rewire the cable rather than soldering the connectors. I'd love confirmation of what the pinout is, I assume straight through, but can't find any confirmation.

The pinout is on page 4-100 of the Hardware Developer's Handbook Release 2.0:

Notice that not all of the pins pair up, and there doesn't seem to be a ground pin for power return.

(In case it's not obvious, the pairs of pins labeled "X" and "X_RET" are to be connected to twisted pairs inside the cable. This reduces crosstalk.)

Thanks. I also found this on Ian's site which answers all of my questions:
http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/pinouts.html

His idea of using two Indycam cable is probably cheapest.

One of the companies that makes custom cables is IEC, others include CEI, Cables to Go, and Cables.com. I'm sure there are hundreds of factories on Alibaba with lower prices.

RE: New Teal Indigo2 / Galileo & Cosmo Question - legodude - 09-27-2024

I'm having trouble getting the Galileo software installed
I did a fresh install of 6.5.22 from Reanimator using default options
I downloaded Galileo 6.5 from Ian's site:
http://sgidepot.co.uk/depot/

I try to install all of the packages:
Code:
i N  galileo.man.pages [d]             16+  Galileo Video Manual Pages
i N  galileo.man.relnotes [d]          16+  Galileo Video Release Notes
i N  galileo.sw.demos                1456+  Galileo Video Demo Software
i N  galileo.sw.diag                 5876+  Galileo Video Diagnostic Software
i N  galileo.sw.eoe [bd]              872+  Galileo Video Execution Software

But I run into conflicts:

Code:
galileo.sw.eoe (1274627333) is incompatible with eoe.sw.base (1289434520)

I feel I'm missing some basic Irix knowledge here.

You're going to need your overlay cds also and the /unbundled directory on the second overlay
