Fired up Octane for 1st time since start of Pandemic. Keyboard Issue -
Intuition - 03-05-2023
Well, the Octane fired up and worked right away after I received my 13w3 to VGA converter.
A new HDMI/VGA monitor ended up working really well with the SGI to my surprise.
I couldn't find my keyboard and mouse, originals for SGI, but I did have a spare older ps2 mouse and keyboard I used with another 2006 era Xp64 system.
These do seem to work overall but I noticed that the Caps Lock key seems to be stuck in the ON position and this makes it all caps as I type and also seems to nullify
my use of the Alt/Shift keys as I can not navigate 3d views in Power Animator or Maya at the moment.
Is this a known issue with non-sgi keyboards?
Should I just break down and order SGI keyboard mouse again?
Thanks.
Wanted to get back to making vids for the channel again.
EDIT---
update... just noticed that the Alt keys and the scroll lock key seem to turn on and off the caps like while caps lock itself doesn't do anything.
Probably the wrong configuration. Is there a keyboard remapper in the Irix Os?

Some keyboards that have abnormal key layouts used to give me issues with my octane, for example, a keypad less compact keyboard swapped some keys around and the caps lock key and control key don't work correctly and other issues.

Ah ok, yeah this is technically an older 2003-2005 era ps2 keyboard and and mouse.
One aspect I like is that the laser mouse seems to work fine which is great
because I really don't like constantly messing with the old roller mouse.
Looks like I'll have to sport for a somewhat authentic SGI keyboard so I can use the special key combos correctly.

Maybe if you could source some ps/2 keyboards and test you could find one that works maybe is just bad luck and you got one that doesn't work.
I have some older dell rubber domes and ibm keyboards that work fine they are all US layout keyboards.

I ended up ordering a standard ps2 SGI keyboard off ebay for $42.
It is a later keyboard with the new letters only logo on the back.
So we'll see if that solves the alt key navigation so I can get around the 3d viewports.

Sorry I didn't see this until just now, you probably could have fixed the problem with xmodmap.

Yeah, I was wondering if there was a remap method. I seem to remember seeing this before maybe at Nekochan.
Anyways, I ordered a keyboard mainly because I really just want it to work as is.
It will be fun making new vids again. I will probably order a VGA capture box so I don't have to setup my phone cam anymore and just get a direct screen capture.

I still use xkeycaps as a graphical front-end to xmodmap, even though the developer (jwz) has ceased development on it, it still works great.

Well the new keyboard wont work because it is actually a USB keyboard that has a PS2 converter on it which I don't think ever works with the older SGI machines.
So, I guess I will try the Xmodmap tweak tonight. I need to configure my SGI for my new Firewalled FiOS setup so I can download xkeycaps to it.
The default gateway is 192.198.0.1 but... is that what I put in the default gateway on the SGI or should I leave it 192.168.1.1?
I think if I put it on 192.198.0.1 the Octane will complain someone else is using the same gateway right?
oof, been a bit since I set one up for networking. I always only do this like once every four years so for some reason I can't remember the details.
I did set to 192.168.1.1 and was able to ping this pc from the Octane so it is seeing this computer through the ethernet.. Now its just getting it to find the internet.
Nothing shows up in Firefox or Netscape.
I want to get it on the internet so I can download xkeycaps because I can't easily figure out... nor want to mess up my default keyboard setup using xmodmap.
In the meantime, I was messing with xmodmap and have run a few commands in the terminal but... I am trying to figure out... which command lets you test a key so you can see which number it is assigned to?
I did the xmodmap -pke and have a list 149 keys long but need to find out which one in the list is actually the ctrl key.
I suppose since CTRL-L is acting like caps lock it IS caps lock but I see that Pause/Break acts like Caps Lock as well.
Caps Lock doesn't act like anything. Shift works normal. Alt and ctrl seem to do nothing except I did notice alt acts like ctrl in maya in that it will allow me to subtract from multiple selections so alt is ctrl. Just need to assign alt to alt
