indy XZ graphics upgrade: saving irix 6.5.22 install -

I've found the
previous forum post on reinstalling graphics eoe components, when upgrading from XL8/XL24 to GR3-XZ board sets. I'm trying to save my current IRIX install as I've spent quite a bit of time setting everything up just the way I like it.
I followed the procedure except for one thing: after copying the files to a temp directory, I dropped into single user mode and serial console to do the install. It completed just fine, rebuild the kernel, and I rebooted. But, on rebooting, it seems Xsgi dosen't even try to launch and I've lost the most important binaries in /usr/gfx like /usr/gfx/setmon, etc.
Is it absolutely necessary to do this procedure booted from a CDROM or over the network in the SASH?
If not, what do I have to do to reinstall the graphics subsystem completely, that is missing in this procedure?

So, long story short, you MUST do this from SASH or the boot PROM software installer. Don't attempt to upgrade your graphics subsystem in single user mode. When I tried to do that, my system removed all graphics drivers and chagned my system to be server-only mode (headless).
