Indy serial port login? - esm - 07-16-2022

I'm running IRIX 5.3 and trying to log in to the serial port on my SGI Indy but I can't get it working. I'm using the following in my /etc/inittab:

t1:23:respawn:/sbin/getty ttyd1 co_9600             # alt console
t2:23:respawn:/sbin/getty -N ttyd2 co_9600          # port 2

The getty is spawned and prints to the serial port:

indy login:

But then nothing. It doesn't echo back any characters that I type. I can't log in. I have tried both ports with various serial terminals and with various baud/parity settings. I've also tried modifying settings in /etc/gettydefs as suggested in the man pages, but I just can't get it working. I have tried different parameters to getty, including the vt100 option.

Is there any suggestions on what else I could try? Is there a known bug with IRIX 5.3 or hardware issues with the Indy RS-232 ports?

I've included a photo of the output on my protocol analyser, showing that the getty does print the login prompt:

I suspect your serial cable is busted or your settings are wrong.

Provide the baud rate and other parts of the serial configuration.

I can't believe that I didn't think of that! I'm using my own homemade 8 pin mini-din to DE-9 cable. I will re-check the pinouts and wiring tomorrow and get back to you.

I got it working. It turns out that the pin numbers on the connector that I'm using are in reverse! It was just by coincidence that the TXD was wired properly but not the RXD.

My next step is to hopefully get it working with my TI 700 teletype.
