AlphaStation DS10: Driver for Cirrus Logic 5430/5440 on Windows? - Linux-RISC - 07-02-2022

I installed Windows 2000 RC 2 on my AlphaStation DS10.

The graphics card is a Cirrus Logic 5430/5440 and Windows doesn't include a driver for it.

The default resolution is 640x480x256 and I changed it to 800x600x256, but now a blue screen is shown on boot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Yk_cGWVZqo

The system can be booted in safe mode, I have downloaded several drivers but no success.

Does anyone have the driver for this card?

Note: the unrecognized Ethernet controller is an additional Intel Ethernet card.

Thanks in advance.

Hm, could it be a faulty card? Since you tried multiple drivers, I do not think it is a software problem...

Can you swap it out for something known to work well in Windows 2K AXP? E.g. Matrox Millenium both I and II, or ELSA GLoria Synergy PCI? The latter often goes cheap on eBay.

If it works with one of those, I'd kick the Cirrus...

Thank you sgt_barnes! You're completely right.

Fortunely, I had a Matrox Millenium II on a shelf, and now it works like a charm:

The old card is quite large:

And the new one is compact:

Thanks also no TruHobbyist, according to this link http://moon.hanya-n.org/comp/alpha/hct/graphics.html the graphics card could also work on Tru64 Unix.

That card of yours appears to be a 4D50T, and there's no windows 2000 driver available for it!!! (Or windows 2000 for Alpha anyway!)

There is a driver for it for AlphaNT. Send me your email address and I'll email it to you.

Indeed, Cirrus Logic's portfolio was only SVGA chips, but the big "INTERGRAPH" logo should clue you in that this card is something else.
The CL-GD5440 was used to provide a VGA BIOS-compatible display for system maintenance tasks. During working operation it was not used.

After 3-4 reboots, the system started showing error messages:

I returned to the old graphics card and installed Windows NT 4.0, it works but the resolution is 800x600x256:

The resolution could be better using the right driver.

Well, after this adventure I have to accept that W2k RC2 is not mature enough and it causes this kind of problems.

The problem using now NT 4.0 is the network doesn't work: ping doesn't get an answer. I suspect this problem is related to link negotiation, I have tested several configurations (AutoSense, 100Tx, 10Tx, ...) and no success. Does anyone know the solution ?

Thanks in advance.

Wait... does it get a link, but won't ping, or you are really getting no link at all?
Does Windows see link but can't get an IP? Do you see your switch port up?

My AlphaStation's able to connect to the internet while running AlphaNT, however, the available browsers are too archaic to be useful!

It's not a physical problem: DS10 boots Debian using bootp and can ping on Tru64, Debian and Windows 2000 (when it wants to boot  Raisedeyebrow ).

But when Windows NT is started, the hourglass is shown for about 25 seconds and ping doesn't work, it's really weird. I can configure the IP addresses for the two available interfaces, of course

I have used on installation a floppy containing this text (README.TXT):

Hardware Support Disk for Windows NT 4.0 for 21264 (EV6) systems
----------------------------------------------------------------
Version:              4.0 Revision E
Date:                  February 15, 1999

This Hardware Support diskette supports installation of Windows NT V4.0
operating system on the following list of 21264 based Compaq Alpha systems.

        Compaq AlphaServer DS20
        Compaq AlphaPC 264DP
        Compaq Professional Workstation XP1000

...

And these files:

A221264.PAL  ATAPI.SYS  DECKZPSX.SYS  HALTSUMP.DLL  HALTSUUP.DLL  OEMSETUP.INF  README.TXT  TXTSETUP.OEM

According to TXTSETUP.OEM, these drivers are for SCSI and IDE CD-ROM.

Is there another floppy for DS10? Perhaps I need updated drivers, like graphics card.

RE: AlphaStation DS10: Driver for Cirrus Logic 5430/5440 on Windows? - Linux-RISC - 07-04-2022

I have more information.

1. The graphics card works Ok on Windows NT 4.0, both English and Spanish versions. No more blue screens and the maximum resolution is 800x600x256.

2. I had and additional network card installed: Intel 82557/8/9/0/1 Ethernet Pro 100. This is how the card is recognized on Debian:

3. The Ethernet controllers 21142/43 do work on Tru64, Debian and Windows 2000, but on Windows NT 4.0 this error is returned:

I removed the Ethernet controller Intel 82557/8/9/0/1 Ethernet Pro 100 to try solve this problem, but no success.

4. I've realized the additional network controller still appears on AlphaBIOS:

Could that be the problem? Is there any way to reset AlphaBIOS?

This is the AlphaBIOS configuration for every 21142/43:
