Navy Mark 71 - vishnu - 06-08-2022

And now for something completely different, my place of employ made exactly one of these, autoloaded 8-inch gun. It was installed and tested on the USS Hull but was never used on an active combatant ship:

Well that looks like a fairly serious piece of kit ;D

The Navy has a long history of paying for development projects like this and then never using them, current debacle being the Zumwalt class guided missile destroyer, 3 built, 29 canceled, 2 in active service.

It is, the navy took it off the Hull before they used the Hull for target practice and sent it down to Davy Jones locker. We still make the Mark 45 5-inch deck guns for the Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyers and the Mark 41 vertical launch missile system. I think the 8-inch gun is in mothballs somewhere at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren division.

lunatic: The Navy is still going gangbusters on their Littoral Combat Systems ship program...
