Jet Turbine Coffee Table - Irinikus - 03-26-2022

I recently bought this beauty with the intension of setting it in a coffee table, which I'll place in my living room:





Here's a rough rendering of my initial idea on a table:





Please share your thought as to how this can be improved upon, as I'm open to suggestions!

Yeah, I totally agree with Shrek! This is an awesome project! I can't wait to see it finished!

Will you do the woodwork yourself? And what kind of wood would you use?

And for the rim of the table, is that a kind of granite?

One of my friends from work has the necessary tooling and contacts to carry out the build.

The top of the table will consist of a black granite ring holding a thick circular piece of inset glass, which will cover the turbine.

I intend to use a red-stained Maple for the table's wooden structure. The lower wooden ring will also feature inset glass, like that found in the granite top, forming a glass shelf below.

The inset glass will rest on a circular "inner ledge", routed into the granite, and the turbine itself will be held in place by resting on a circular "inner ledge" routed into the wooden stricture below, being hold in place around its edge and thus allowing you to see through it.

I should hopefully receive the turbine disc tomorrow!

I got seriously screwed over when it came to the Tax and Duty I had to pay on it!!!!!! 40% of the 1200UKP (including shipping) that I payed for it!!! Holy Shite!!!

I hate loosing money in this way!!!

I don't usually pay duty on computers!!!!!

The seller that I bought it from has another one for sale!

I love the structural circle uniting the legs. I'd just make sure it has enough clearance for a robotic vacuum cleaner to go under.

Everything I put home since I got my robotic cleaner and my robotic mop is measured to make sure it doesn't block their work.

I now have my turbine! (It's one solid piece of titanium!!!)





I initially thought I'd get it polished, but now I think it would be better if I left it raw (Original).

It does need a good clean with engine cleaner though!!!

Roughly speaking, astronomers divide star systems into two types, population 1 and population 2. Population 2 systems form from the remnants of population 1 systems, our "Sol" system is population 2. For example, the stars in the globular clusters that surround our galaxy are all, or mostly all, population 1 stars. I was an astrophysics major for my first two years at Minnesota, then I came to my senses and switched majors to physics... 😂

And that is a VERY cool piece of titanium! The only titanium I own is in my driver and my fairway woods... 😆

Excellent choice of materials, that table will no doubt be an eye catcher! I especially like the dark wood and stone versus shiny metal contrast!

A bit OT, but: Wasn't it the other way round? Like, sun being population 1, forming out of remnants of population 2? After all, we do not know which population really was the first, so it would appear somewhat presumptous to name one that.

Not that I tried to major in astrophysics...

Population 1 stars, which started to form after the "final scattering" that is now observable as the cosmic microwave background, were formed from mostly hydrogen but with a little bit of helium, and a scant few heavier elements, for example one being lithium. A star's entire existence is a battle against gravitational collapse. Once the hydrogen and helium has been fused into heavier elements, the star's radiation output decreases, causing it to contract further, which raises its internal temperature high enough to begin fusing those heavier elements. Once the iron limit has been reached, the star can no longer forestall its gravitation collapse by radiating energy outward. If the star's mass is, somewhat approximately greater than three solar masses, which is to say, three times greater than the mass of our sun, even though it will blow off a lot of material in a Nova or Supernova event, the inner core of the star will collapse into a black hole.

Back on topic: Really cool titanium turbofan, what type of engine was it a part of? Enquiring minds want to know! 😁
