o350 env chip locations -
vvuk - 02-28-2022
I swear I saw an image of this somewhere, but can't find it -- does anyone have the o350 mainboard env chip locations mapped out, or do I have to go hunting?
I've got an o350 + IP59 cbrick that's reporting bogus temps and a bogus 12V voltage; says 5.813V on the 12V rail both powered off and powered on! 12V #2 reports 0 and 12V respectively as I'd expect. (Temps are all at 3C except for one 77C, all of which is totally wrong.)
Relatedly, does anyone know where 12V (#1) and 12V #2 come from? The fact that it's showing 5.813 powered off makes me doubtful the supply is an issue, but I'd like to measure at least.

The voltage reading being off sounds to me like a bad vrm.

I need to know these locations myself, I've never seen an image other than a Fuel mainboard for DS1780 locations.

+12V comes straight from the PSU. Just exchange PSUs and see if the problem move with the PSU or stays with the system. I bet you it's the env chip in the system. It's likely on the mainboard somewhere on the area underneath the chassis fans.
The PSU is a rebadged Delta DPS-500EB. It provides:
- 15V BIAS @ 50mA
- -12V @ 0.5A
- 5V @ 2.0A
- 12V @ 40A
It's pretty obvious you won't go far with 0.5 or 2.0A and the BIAS supply is almost certainly an always-on AUX supply (for the L1 in case of the Origin). So everything derives from the 12V rail, as in most modern PC designs.
NB: There's a known manufacturing fault in these PSUs, or at least in older revisions of it. Look for Intel Technical Advisary TA-0674-5. The primary PFC diode will fail and blow up (this happened to my O350). I serviced this and other PSUs and the problem didn't come back.

Good find! Still would love hints on those DS1780 IC locations.

Hi vvuk & co,
there are two DS1780 chips on the O350 2U_INT_53 interface board.
Looking from front they are on right hand side (same side as power supplies) and marked as: G7G5 & H5G5 and sit in section in between the right hand side blue plastic system board locator and the DALLAS DS1742W-120 chip .
I am getting this from looking at a few photos of the board, as I do not have a nice single high res picture of the entire board.
I hope this is helpful.
Cheers from Oz,
jwhat/John.

Well, how many NODEs are listed on an O350 for env?
Each node is a DS1780, right?
Can’t we determine the number of ICs at least with this method or do I have that wrong?

Thanks -- I've actually got two spare PSUs that I can try swapping in, but given that the 5.813V reading stays the same whether power is off or on, and that the temperatures are bogus I'm betting on the env chip as well. Do you happen to know if the "12V" and "12V #2" readings are just the 12V rail at two different locations, or the independent 12V rails from each of the two PSUs? Given that the PSUs are supposed to be redundant I would have expected it to just fault one PSU and continue from the other, but instead it triggers an auto-shutdown (in 30s, so certainly not urgently; maybe that's a configurable thing, and this is just set to shut down on any PSU fault?)
I'll try to take some high rez pictures of the mainboard when I look for the chips.
Also, in case this isn't known.. this o350 happened to be missing the CPU VRM. The VRM turns out to be a standard part, VR091B080CS that's used in some HP servers as well. I bought one inexpensively ($15) on ebay, it's identical to the VRM board that's in my other o350s.

I don't know for sure, but my bet is on the independent PSUs because my O350 (which has only a single PSU per node) only lists 12V#2:
