overlogic2011 - 01-01-2022
Hello,
My O2 cdrom is damaged, it's ejecting without permission and when i try to close it , ejects again and again. I just want to know if is there a way to turn him off with console commands , unmounting it permanently , or the only way is opening the O2 and unplug the cable. Please, if possible, give me the some hint, what i shoud do, and how. Thanks in advance!

Try as root:
#chkconfig mediad off
Then reboot. Won't be able to access CD-ROM, DAT.. any removable media with that turned off.

Thank you indigofan for quick reply! I will do that.

Note this will only work if it's a software issue if it's a hardware issue with the CD drive you will have to unplug it.

Thanks Raion, i just figured that out, it's a hardware fault, the command not worked.

There was a common failure mode where a small plastic gear in the drive would break. There could also be a foreign object inside (like a paperclip or screw) that is causing it to endlessly eject.

You know I wish I had the resources and knowledge to re-create those gears, I've seen it done but man it's a time/supply investment. Also belts...I don't know where you get correct CD-ROM drive belts these days. It'd sure be cool of some forum member could figure out the gear (CAD) designs and print up a big resin batch or something and also the darn belts. The older SCSI CDROMs/DVD-ROMs seems to have some great, long-lived, lasers in these drives...the darn gears and belt are the fragile points and they seem fixable, so it's even more sad.

And you guys know if i can buy any scsi cdrom and install it or i will need one that only work for O2? I will need to install drivers for him or O2 will detect it without problem? Thanks!

So yes and no, it's a 50 pin SCSI and you can buy nearly anything but....
It was a toshiba so any NON-toshiba won't likely fit tray bezel onto it. Also while most Toshibas works (including DVDROM) the ability to use 512 block AND the location of the eject button are ALL different. I have a DVD-ROM in my O2, tray bezel fits...but eject button doesn't connect (physically) so I have to use software eject. I'd have to 3d print something or whatever to connect it...or care.
So you want the bezel to fit...get a correct toshiba SCSI optical.
