Need help playing a muscic cd - solaris - 12-04-2021

I've tried using xmcd with my Indigo2 with external Toshiba XM6201.  I can get it to pop up and play cds, but there is no sound.  Simply clicking on the cdrom icon gives

CDopen(): Permission denied.

I know this is a newbie question but please help.

The native cd player application is called cdplayer(1) and is simpler to use.

I tried cdpayer, the results were

Ok...

Do I simply chmod the device or change the permissions  given to users or a group?

How do I grant access of the cdrom drive to users?

Do I need to put some entries in /etc/group ?

What does a useful group file look like?
