SGI Fuel PSU Replacement Options or Service the Original - megaimg - 11-14-2021

I just got a Fuel Back online....The unit is operational, but the PSU sometime (if the unit is not been power on for a long time), the 12v rail sometime goes under specs according to the L1 monitoring, and power down the system. After couple of try, it will normalize and work perfectly.

I know if the PSU fail can damage the Logic board. So I know their is 2 options
1. Service the current PSU
2 ATX PSU Swap

On option 1 (Service the current one), I can swap all the capacitors for new ones, if any of you had work on this PSU, what other parts can fail that I need to swap!
On Option 2 (ATX Replacement using an adapter), what modern PSU do you guys recommend.

Thanks for any info you can provide....

Hi Megaimg,

glad that you got Fuel back up and running.

This is a great question, as Fuel owner my preference would be to recap original SGI power supply.

Also I got good advise from Hamei (original Nekochan Fuel pioneer) that it is a not a question if but when the SGI Fuel supply lets go.

He went through four SGI power supplies before the Adaptor fix was available.

Weblacky is the SGI power supply guru, so need to get view from him ;-)

Cheers from Oz,

I just order the ATX Adapter, but I will recap the original PSU.... good ATX PSU is expensive, so recapping the original sound more economic. I hope he see the post and comment on it....

So I spend couple of hours disassemble and making a list of all the capacitors on the Fuel PSU.
Half of them where already Bulged. So that the issue in the failure of keeping a stable voltage.
I just order all the caps ($45)...
 update soon!

Hi Magaimg,

well that does not look like a bit of high quality engineering ... ;-(

Could you advise on what type it is. On SGI Depot they list a number of different Fuel power supply types:
- PSU 460W: - SGI PN 060-0202-001, Model FSP460-60PFN, made by Sparkle
- PSU 460W: - SGI PN 060-0140-007, Model HP-W460GC33
- PSU 430W: - SGI PN 060-0140-005, Model GM430WTXW01SSV
- PSU 430W: - SGI PN 060-0140-004, Model GM430WTXW01SSV

Looking closely at your picture it looks like it has FSP460 so might be Sparkle model.

So maybe some more electrical engineering types can advise if the problem with Fuel Power Supplies is due to flawed design or just crap manufactoring & components.

The One in my unit is PSU 460W: - SGI PN 060-0202-001, Model FSP460-60PFN
The use TEPO Caps, and Couple of them already fail capacitate on my tester.
Attached the Mouser list of Capacitors

RE: SGI Fuel PSU Replacement Options or Service the Original - weblacky - 11-15-2021

Yeah, FSP ATX PSUs are expensive buggers too, I use one with the Fuel ATX Adapter due to requirements. I’ve not gotten to my old Fuel PSU, which is the same model.

Yeah remember SGI didn’t design any PSUs, and the modern SGIs are all cheaper PSUs than the previous models (by my estimate). I guess due to the fact that SGI slid closer to ATX so they could go cheaper? Not as many special requirements? Just a guess.

But Fuel is like Indigo2, in that it has several PSUs (and wattages for some reason). This makes templating a capacitor replacement built order much harder! Since there isn’t just one (like O2) or two versions (like Indy or Octane).

RE: SGI Fuel PSU Replacement Options or Service the Original - jwhat - 11-15-2021

Hi Weblacky,

based on what you said, does that mean that the original Sparkle FSP460-60PFN is not specially wired for SGI and so needs ATX Adaptor ?

Also could you comment on quality, is it bad design prone to failure or just poor component quality ?

Thanks,

jwhat/John

RE: SGI Fuel PSU Replacement Options or Service the Original - weblacky - 11-15-2021

No, sorry that’s not what I meant, if understand your question.

That SGI PSU was a specially wired WTX PSU (a server standard never really picked up by the mainstream). If you found a PSU with the exact same FSP model (but no SGI part number label on it) it’s still missing the fan signal (I think) but would be ATX or WTX (you’d need to check). The Tezro (ATX) and Fuel (WTX) PSUs are modified versions of their manufacture model numbers. So buying a PSU for either Tezro or Fuel based on Manufacturing model number will not work! It’s still missing the modifications done for SGI.

Now that FSP PSU Family is still made under an ATX standard.

Similar power abilities and EXACTLY the same case design (custom hanger screw holes and everything!). So if you pickup an ATX form from (to use the known ATX Adapter) that same FSP family you can also reattach that front metal hanger that should be on your SGI PSU.

I hope I understood your question and answered what you were asking.

RE: SGI Fuel PSU Replacement Options or Service the Original - jwhat - 11-16-2021

Hi Weblackly,

yes you have have answered my question on the generic Sparkle FSP460-60PFN.

In summary: the non-SGI part number (ie OEM) version does not have the SGI specific modification to support the fan signal.

But you did not comment on my second question ;-)

Q2) Is it bad design prone to failure or just poor component quality ?

Or will all these power supplies die in the fullness of time including Octane "Cherokee" ?

Hence your post: https://forums.irixnet.org/thread-865.html

Thanks very much.

jwhat/John.
