Web Series that jumped the shark - Raion - 10-31-2021

When do you call it quits from something you once loved? I used to watch, for instance, Angry Video Game Nerd. I stopped regularly watching in 2016, and I recently rewatched a lot of it -- I'd say he jumped the shark at one of two points: Toxic Crusaders, due to his horrible acting and just straight up gross out humor, or Beavis and Butthead.

Combine with Mike Matei, a longtime contributor leaving (who was a controversial figure in his own right -- I won't defend him or trash him, but he has been accused of a lot of stuff.) I just think James lost his touch and he's doing it for the money. Moreover, maybe the fact he's supporting two kids now gives me pause. He's nearly 40. I like him, and I'm respecting of his accomplishments. I just think he's got nothing to his current content.

When did you call it quits from a web series?

To be frank, I think AVGN was pretty much always something done for the clicks; it never came across as not performative to me. Much prefer Rolfe's annual "Monster Madness" countdowns, which show a lot more love for and in-depth knowledge of the material and a lot less forced humor.
